The Challenge of License Management
There is a main problem in setting up your license management. When you purchase a software from your vendor, the product’s name on the bill may differ from the name the software will have when it is installed to a computer. The vendor may call his goods like ”MS Off pro 2016”, but if you scan a PC, it will have a name like “Microsoft Office 2016 Professional“. If you would just import the purchased products from you buyer’s database, a qualified reconciliation may be impossible, because the names differ. You can only create a license balance if the names match (depending on the used license metrics).
Some license-management solutions use proprietary product identifiers and centralized software catalogs. Lan-Inspector instead works with the product names detected in the network. This approach reduces dependency on third-party catalog services and lets customers maintain their own mappings between installed products and purchased licenses.
